DETROIT (AP)... A Detroit gas station employee may have panicked as he locked a store door to prevent a possible theft, before a man shot at three innocent bystanders. But he did not commit a criminal offense, according to his lawyer on Friday.

A magistrate has set a bond of $200,000 for Al-Hassan Aiyash (22), who is accused of involuntary homicide in the death a customer. He is accused by the prosecution of gross negligence for locking the door after a man attempted to leave with items less than $4.

On May 6, a man was shot and killed, while two others were injured. Samuel McCray, 27 years old, has been charged with murder as well as other crimes.

Aiyash’s lawyer said that it is'really unfair' to set such a high bail while the prosecutors present a legal theory uncommon.

Jamil Khuja said to the judge, "He was just doing his job." "Did the man act in an inappropriate manner because he was panicked? They can only argue that they were in a panic.

McCray, according to the police, tried to leave McCray's gas station after an electronic purchase failed.

Aiyash, behind a protective glass, locked the door remotely, keeping McCray, and three other bystanders, inside during the argument. The prosecutor's offices said that he unlocked the doors shortly before the shooting but that the other witnesses didn't seem to know.

Before setting the bond, Magistrate Malaika Ramsay-Heath stated that 'people were beseeching to be let go.'

James White, the chief of Detroit's police department, said that he would be in favor of a ban on local stores locking customers inside.

White stated, "I don't see any logical reason why a person should be locked in for whatever reason without the ability to escape."
