‘A safe space': Facebook group unites Henderson Black community
When real estate agents Nicci and Jameen Willis moved to Henderson in 2019, they found it difficult to connect with other people of color in their new community. So, the pair created a Facebook group…

Nicci Willis stated that the reason we started the group was to create a sense community. Its mission is to "network, inform, and meet other peoples of color in Henderson." It hosts two monthly events to facilitate networking in person, and one annual gathering for members in September. "People often ask the question: "Do Black people live here?" Several clients asked this question of the couple when they were considering moving to Henderson. The couple used their YouTube channel to promote their real estate business and published a video entitled "Do Black people live here?" Stone stated that the Saturday morning meetup was one of her first events. Jackson stated, "What you don’t realize is that there’s a lot people like me who have been here for six-years." She said, "We are not trying to exclude people." Nicci Willis stated that keeping the Facebook group secret allows the three administrators to enforce the rules and keep the page's status as an'safe space'. According to the group's founders, members and others involved, they have been dedicated to keeping Black Henderson Nevada happy. This positivity has continued as the community grows.
