Blushing was once considered a unique human expression, but a recent study reveals that hens also blush and can express fear and excitement. The study found that hens fluff their head feathers when calm and blush for a few seconds when excited or scared. Blushing in hens is seen as a reaction to strong emotions similar to humans. Researchers observed 17 hens on a farm for four weeks to understand their visible expressions of emotions. The study suggests that hens’ facial expressions can provide insights into their welfare. Further research will explore individual differences and the correlation between emotional displays and social interactions.
