A rare fossil has revealed the unfortunate demise of a prehistoric sea cow. The fossil, found in Venezuela, shows that the sea cow was attacked by a crocodile and a tiger shark while swimming in the sea 15 million years ago. The remains include a partial skull and 13 vertebrae, which displayed bite marks from both predators. The crocodile attacked first, leaving deep tooth impacts in the sea cow’s snout and tearing its flesh. The tiger shark scavenged on the sea cow’s body, leaving marks throughout. The discovery provides insights into the food chain during the early to middle Miocene Epoch.
