Since the announcement of a major shift at DC Studios, where James Gunn was newly named co-CEO, #fireJamesGunn became a trending hashtag on Twitter. The news was shocking to DC fans, who were led to believe that Cavill would be returning to the role. The post-credits scene to Dwayne Johnson's highly-anticipated superhero movie Black Adam strongly implied that Cavill would face off against Superman in a sequel. Marvel Studios' template for superhero films is that they tease future crossovers in post-credits scenes. DC, unlike Marvel, rarely follows through on this promise. The overarching plan of the cinematic universe was not established since Joss Whedon’s Justice League was criticised by both fans and critics. Gunn, who wrote and directed Guardians of the Galaxy and Peacemaker for DC, said that Superman was a priority, if it wasn't the most important, and that he'd been working on a new take on the character for some while.
Gunn has a solid resume. Despite the fact that he plays an obscure character, his Peacemaker series was hailed as one of the most engaging superhero stories in the world. Many DC fans thought Cavill was the perfect choice for Superman because of his sleek features and enthusiasm as a nerd. He had never been given the chance to portray a comic-accurate version. Cavill's past appearances as Superman had him kill an opponent and then quickly resurrect, briefly becoming a villain. Many DC fans loved Cavill's Superman or hoped for Cavill to be given better material. Gunn replied on Twitter after several days of #fireJamesGunn being trending. He assured concerned fans that he was serious about the responsibility. "No one likes to be harassed and called names. But, to be honest, we've seen much worse. Gunn effectively stated to DC fans in his thread that he would not respond to their activism. DC Studios made the Superman announcement as another surprise announcement. A number of television programs and films have been cancelled or scrapped by Warner Bros. such as Wonder Woman and Batgirl. Ezra Miller stars in the Flash movie. However, the film was able to survive the cuts. The film has been plagued with controversy since Miller's alleged crime spree. The DC Universe has been in chaos for quite some time. Gunn appears determined to bring it back into order and promises to prioritize stories. Gunn is a skilled writer who can create compelling characters. It seems safe to trust his intuitions. Gunn's short stint as a 'canceled' performer has hopefully prepared him for the furious fan tsunami; it seems likely that the onslaught will continue for some time.
