The Whittle School's D.C. shutdown continues to reverberate

Editor's Note: We are counting down to the Washington Business Journal’s top 10 stories for 2022. The Whittle School's D.C. campus made it to the second half of 2022. Chris Whittle, the CEO and chairman, sent the final email on Friday afternoon. It was July 8, after the academic school had ended and Northwest D.C. had just graduated its first class. This was not the only sign of trouble. Whittle, an education reform entrepreneur, who spent decades starting startups, informed teachers, staff, and families of students that the school did not have the resources to maintain its D.C. campus. Teachers, administrators, and other staff have not received their remaining paychecks since the shutdown was announced. The landlord was awarded by a D.C. judge the rent and real property taxes owed. It remains to be seen what happens to the building located at 4000 Connecticut Ave. NW. This was the Intelsat headquarters.
