People familiar with the situation say that a few weeks ago, Fox News lawyers were preparing for a showdown in court with Dominion Voting Systems. They presented Tucker Carlson what they considered to be good news. They had convinced the court to remove from a legal document the instance when he used the c word to refer to a senior Fox News executive, people said.

Mr. Carlson was not impressed. The people claimed that Carlson told his colleagues he wanted to let the world know what he said in a personal message about the executive. The people said that Mr. Carlson claimed the comments he made in court documents about Donald Trump, 'I hate him fiercely' were uttered during a brief spasm of anger. However, his hatred of this executive is deep and lasting.
